The formula for calculating spousal maintenance provides the lower-earner with 40% of the combined gross monthly income, and the higher earner with 60% of the combined gross monthly income. Judges are not required to follow a formula when calculating spousal maintenance. Child support can be modified whenever there is a substantial and continuous change in circumstance that would result in a change of 10% or more in the child support calculation. Child support is calculated through a worksheet approved by the legislature. Joint legal custody is now referred to as "joint decision-making" in Colorado. Joint decision-making means that the parents must make major decisions regarding their children together by agreement.
